| The Race Awareness Program focuses on statutory race relations legislation. Delivered on CD-ROM, across a corporate intranet or on the web, the product offers a genuine first step towards breaking down institutional racism.
This is a major issue that has added emphasis to the need to comply with recent race relations legislation. The legislation has been enhanced and updated in response to social, political and EU pressures. The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 imposed a number of statutory duties on public sector organisations and private sector organisations that are involved with them. This was followed by the Race Relations Act 1976 (Amendment) Regulations 2003, which further strengthened the duties placed on all organisations.
The training programme protects organisations by ‘mainstreaming’ awareness about race equality issues to every member of staff in line with HR, race relations and employment policies and law. Psychological training methods encourage individuals to gain real insights into the way they think and behave in line with the spirit of the legislation – ensuring true learning and raised awareness to further reduce the likelihood of incidents and consequent litigation. Importantly, it provides a verifiable audit trail for use at employment tribunals.
The training programme uses a blend of information and thought-provoking images and quotations, exercises, learning processes and critical questions to take the user through a stimulating half hour of learning. At the end of the process, users have an understanding of:
> Their responsibilities under race relations legislation and how they can meet those responsibilities – and the pitfalls of non-compliance
> How racism and prejudice occurs and the implications for how they think and behave, including insights into stereotyping, assumptions, value systems, inference and prejudice
> Guidance on how to value people and their diversity and to promote race equality as an individual and/or as a manager
> Opportunities to demonstrate learning, understanding and commitment to the principles of race equality in line with statutory responsibilities
